Electric Black - Beggars, Thieves And Everything Inbetween

EP review by; DeeDee

A retro review for this 6 track EP that the guys from Hitchin released back in November. Why, well, the band are currently finalising a new 12 track album, which will be their sophomore, so I wanted to bring Electric Black to your attention in advance. They are also one of the finest NWOCR bands currently on the road and have just returned from a short tour in Spain. Let’s go through the songs one by one.

Calendar Queen - A mesmerising track, where Alistair Shiach’s vocals are as faultless as ever. However, it’s a resounding contribution from all the band. ‘Calendar Queen’ has every element you desire, heavy bass, bluesy overtones and pounding guitar. From the opening riff by Jonny Bryant, you are taken in. A bounce of a chorus and uplifting rhythm with those razor sharp strings lying low and then the drums of Matt Butler lead into a moody section, before finally nose diving into oblivion.

Closer To Death - A track that sets out like a comfortable walk, but turns onto a more adventurous path. There’s a guitar screaming to be released and a punching pulse, which allows Alistair’s lyrics to rise higher. As the song travels, there’s an outburst of sounds but the attraction of this tune is the easy sway and simplicity.

Take Me To The Church - Deeper and more defined, this track hints of gospel blues. Actually ,it would sound amazing with a full choir. More unconditional and rapturous vocals with a supplement of weaving guitar and excelling chords.

Down To Ride - The blend is taken right down for this ballad and it’s an example of pure acoustic brilliance. Just sit back and let this one flow over you. The softness, the crispness and the pristine result is absolutely breath taking.

Build It And They Will Come - A funky, rhythm and blues number that has a massive amount of charisma. The bass of Ryan Trotman holds it together, while guitars ring out more sumptuous hooks, the band really get into the groove on this one.

Eagle (Live) - A live version of the song that appeared on the debut album ‘The Calm Before’. Another that allows you to journey into another dimension, where soulful lyrics and a mix of chords make you crave for more.

An EP with a level of warmth and passion that you don’t often find these days. These Hertfordshire rockers are an Incredible band that keep delivering and never fall short. For lovers of Bad Company, Rival Sons and Black Stone Cherry add them to your list of favourites and go to their social pages for more details and to pre-order the new album ASAP.
