EP review by; Rock Queen 13

‘No Time Like The Past’ is the second EP release from South East Englanders Rise of the Machine. Known for being excellent genre blenders, ROTM describe their influences as deriving from grunge, rock and funk, and the four tracks on this EP will give you that in spades and quite a lot more besides! There are no single releases planned so you get the EP in its entirety dropped on 27th January.

It’s a quirky little thing, this EP. Overall it has a real retro feel to it, echoes of 1970s psychedelic and progressive rock run through it from start to finish. But every now and then something completely incongruous will be inserted into the music when you least expect it. Sounds very unsettling when you describe it like that, yet somehow it works. Just don’t ask me how!

Each song is multi faceted and switches from the sublime and understated to full on speed rock pretty seamlessly. ‘Byegone Days’ demonstrates this perfectly, a tricky act to pull off but it’s a success. Also on the EP you’ll find some disco, soul, jazz and funky grooves, and vocals that can hit all the high notes and make them pop. Very hard to describe, and this is all the more reason why it needs to be heard to be believed. It showcases the skills of each musician with the extensive range of vocals, complex drumming, hooky guitars and stylish bass. It really takes the music to another dimension and the imagination involved with creating these tunes is capacious.

I’ve never heard anything quite like it, and I’d like to hear more! If this is a flavour of what this band can do, I really hope a debut album is forthcoming so we can get a bit more of this creativity! It’s refreshing to hear something completely original, these guys have taken a fair few risks in the construction of these songs and they have 100% paid off. Like your rock music unconventional with artistic substance and an evocative edge? This is for you. It’s also for anyone who wants to try something a little different whilst remaining within the genres they know and love.
