Anvil – Legal At Last

Album review by; Myk

This is Anvils’ eighteen album and the formula hasn’t changed since the independent debut back in 1981.

They have big riffs, harmonies and a fast and furious approach, with a sound sometimes reminiscent of Judas Priest back in the early eighties showing how they have not progressed or developed in all this time.

The lyrics come across as simplistic and at times a little tongue in cheek but with the every present Steve "Lips" Kudlows’ distinct gruff vocal style fitting with the whole approach.

Sophistication is not something that is ever likely to be associated with Anvil but their enthusiasm for the music is clear and the frenetic drumming from founder member Robb Reiner is complemented by “Lips” equally intense guitar work which is superbly executed.

So if you like your metal simple and no nonsense then you’re probably going to like this. However if you prefer a more modern sound or a level of sophistication then this is probably not for you other than as a brief curio, soon to be forgotten.

6/10
