Sam Millar – Radio Gouda EP

Review by; Myk

Ex Bigfoot guitarist Sam Millar comes up with his second EP, that is not quite as sugary sweet as the previous ‘Holy Sass’ but the commercial vibe is still clearly evident.

All compositions are of the soft rock variety being what I would term radio friendly and will appeal to a broad audience. Guitars are more to the fore than the previous offering and there is still a hint of McFly/Busted which is good thing.

After a brief intro track deigned to resemble a radio being tuned ‘Human’ kicks us off with a catchy chorus and some nice harmonies. ‘Let It Rain’ begins with a slow piano driven intro before the guitars kick in with the chorus which sounds great, then the guitars fade in and out with the vocals a bit before steadily becoming more prominent in the mix. The song then ends very abruptly which does not sound right at all.

Sober’ starts with a nice rocky guitar intro, promising a heavier number before it fails to deliver on that promise and instead settles back into a steady rhythm with the guitars pushed the fore. ‘Levi’s’ begins at an up-tempo pace and this time keeps going and is another rockier number with guitars again to the fore with some amusing well thought out lyrics.

There is little to fault with this offering and it’s a step up from the previous EP. But I feel the more discerning rock aficionado is likely to give this a wide berth after an initial listen as it lacks substance and I am not really sure who the target audience is.
