Gilby Clarke – The Gospel Truth

Album review by; Tuesday

Gilby is an excellent storyteller.  Whatever his sandpaper vocals sing, you're transfixed believing in every word.  The rawness to his vocal delivery only leads to enhance the belief that what you're about to hear is the truth, the Gospel truth at that.

His guitar playing throughout the new album is signature Gilby, striking and direct.  The title track on The Gospel Truth sounds like it's straight from a movie soundtrack, a big band trumpet like sound and dirty bass and guitar rhythms.  To top these rhythms there's a prominent drum sound; Devil's drumbeat is certainly present here!  Wayfarer opens with a cool sophisticated sound and a jazzy Pink Panther vibe.  The clever ears out there may have noticed some guest performers on Tightwad; the angsty punky beat ridden track features no other than Nikki Sixx and Stephen Perkins of Motley Crüe and Jane's Addiction fame retrospectively.

Rock N Roll Is Getting Louder has all the elements of a soon to be classic.  It mentions motorcycles, uses the phrase 'crazy wild and dirty', has a superb riff, a big sound and a cowbell!!  Who could ask for more?!

Wise Old Timer has a tasty guitar tone and a super low bass vibration.  Violation has a lovely Stones esque vibe and is really well constructed and great to dance to.  There's an interesting connection between the guitar and bass on The Ending and the timing of everything interlinking is well thought out.

Dangerous Sin has an enjoyable chorus and exceptional solo guitar work.  Rusted And Busted features well executed guitar layers.  She Won't Fight Fair has all the same excellence as the classic Gilby track Skin And Bones, everything we love about that track is present here as well as even more excellent soloing.

Gilby has a wonderful musical CV, having been a part of some of the biggest bands in the world, but none of that is important for this review as he's an excellent artist in his own right.

For fans of his solo work this album will not disappoint.  It's a very credible body of work and we expected nothing less.

For new listeners out there our top track picks from this new album are Violation, Tightwad and She Won't Fight Fair.  We also recommend you invest in a copy of the classics Pawnshop Guitars and The Hangover.

5/5*
