Blue Öyster Cult – Hard Rock Live Cleveland
Album review by; Myk
Recorded in 2014 this captures a band clearly enjoying themselves giving a very polished performance. The quality of the recording is strangely my only issue, it is too good and sometimes I forgot it was live album with the audience totally missing from the sound. I suppose this is down to modern technics in capturing the recording.
Covering numbers all the way back to 1972 this has a mix of classic tracks and a few lesser heard numbers as well. You get some glorious seventies style overindulgence in particular with ‘Godzilla’ stretched out to almost 13 minutes including drum and bass solos. The tempo throughout is controlled with a well-balanced mix of faster and slower numbers giving the listener space to gather their thoughts as if on a roller coaster ride.
It is hard to pick out any real highlights as it is so consistently good throughout. But ‘The Red and the Black’, ‘Shooting Shark’, ‘Harvester of Eyes’, Career of Evil’ and ‘Golden Age of Leather’ all come to mind but my personal favourite is the less played ‘Black Blade’ from 1980’s Cultosaurus Erectus.
It only fails to get a 5 because of the lack of crowd noise.
4.5/5
