Lionheart – The Reality Of Miracles
Album review by; Myk
Forty years on from their formation in 1980, Lionheart release only their third album, the second since reforming in 2016.
The music a throwback to the early 80s rock/metal sound, Dennis Stratton brings a little Maiden influence from his time with them on their first album, Lee Small brings a taste of Phenomena from his tenure with that project around 2006, there’s also a bit of Magnum and Rainbow thrown in for good measure.
The short atmospheric intro ‘Salvation’ leads into the big production ‘Thine Is The Kingdom’ that sets the tone for the rest of the album. It’s unashamedly radio friendly, middle of the road soft rock with hints of pop.
Given all the influences stated the mix works and the whole album flows very coherently.
Lee Small’s vocals are eminently suited to the songs and he is ably supported by the three backing vocalists, with keyboards adding depth to the soundscape. They aren’t afraid to mix things up a bit on ‘Five Tribes’ increasing the tempo with a driving drum beat.
Then ‘Behind The Wall’ adds strings to great effect and each time I listen to this album I hear more nuances.
‘Widows’ the latest single, is a nice catchy rocker and deserves to get airplay.
‘Kingdom Of the East’ is essentially a duet with one of the backing vocalists adding their much deeper timbre to great effect.
This is a sophisticated and well put together record with plenty of variety that deserves attention.
