Spread Eagle – Grand Scam
Single review by; Ruthii
Hailing from New York, Spread Eagle have been active since 1989. They have somewhat taken a hiatus from the early 90’s to 2006, when they were reformed by one of the founding members Rob De Luca and band member Ray West.
De Luca is also best known for his work playing bass for UFO.
During their comeback in 2006, Spread Eagle re-released their self-titled debut album.
With the release of this single and a deal with Frontiers, we are set for a new studio album in 2019.
Grand Scam is the second single to be released from the forth coming album, Subway to the Stars. The first single, Sound of Speed, was released in May 2019.
Grand Scam starts off as heavy as its predecessor, installing confidence that Subway to the Stars is going to be one hot and heavy album.
Containing several expletives, this is not one for the kids! This is proper grown up music that needs to be listened full blast with the windows down, giving the horns! Spread Eagle have been classed as glam rock in the past, I can see why, having been a listener of their previous 2 albums, the self-titled Spread Eagle and 1993’s Open To The Public.
Their 2019 sound is a far cry from this. It has a raw underground heavy sound, but do not let this dissuade you if you are expecting what you are more used to with Spread Eagle. Although it is a ballsy heavy number, it is still catchy and melodic and grabs you by the proverbials (if I had any).
Bassist De Luca has reflected on their new sound stating he wanted to go back, not to what they were before, but a time before that, back to the egg. I can certainly conclude that they have gone right back there to that egg, this is like a whole new band, and I for one am a fan all over again.
I will be first in line for the album release; it’s going to be a banger.
Subway to the Stars, out on 9th August 2019.
