Attic Theory – The Sign Of An Active Mind

EP review by; Myk

Rising from the ashes of 3 bands this Liverpool based 6 piece kick off their debut EP with the very catchy ‘Marionette’ with great riffs, good use of gruff backing vocals instantly getting me hooked.

Next up is another hard hitting number in ‘Cold Hard Reality’ highlighting the excellent composition skills before they slow things down for a much more reflective number ‘Your Light’ with some great guitar and vocals which at times sounded a bit like In Flames.

Musically they may come under the NWOCR umbrella but that encompasses so many different sounds and styles and Attic Theory have a very modern sound, maybe with nods to the past but no hint of retro. The drum driven ‘Doesn’t Matter’ continues in the same vein before ‘My Own Design’ at times reminiscent of Disturbed further emphasising the maturity of the song writing.

The closing track ‘Saints Amongst Us’ is another ridiculously catchy tune with towering riffs and sing-along chorus.

With superb input from the 3 guitarists (Matt Lawler, Tim Cunningham and Peter Donnelly) and great vocals throughout courtesy of Lewis Wright it would be a bit remiss not to mention the solid foundation supplied from Matt Simon on drums and Kenneth McArthur on bass.

Then if you add to the obvious writing skills and great musicianship the top drawer production this is an incredible debut and thoroughly deserving of 5/5
