Sweet Crisis

Leos Red Lion, Gravesend - 15th Feb 2020

Review by; Myk

Unfortunately due to the rather wild weather with storm Dennis hitting hard the usually well attended Red Lion was well down on numbers. The bands however braved the elements and made the most of it.

Powerhouse – a localish Ashford based band supplied us with an entertaining set of covers including the Otis Redding classic Hard to Handle that segued beautifully into Joe Souths’ Hush and back again.

They finished off their set with a great cover of the Beatles Come Together.

Good musicianship and a good singer, thoroughly entertaining.

Trident Waters – a Southern blues rock infused trio, with singer guitarist Andrew resplendent in shades looking like a cross between ELOs’ Jeff Lynne and BOCs’ Eric Bloom. They rock hard with Desert Soul and Gallows from their latest EP coming across superbly. The small audience were treated to an absolutely stunning set. With great rhythms and superb guitar breaks the set had it all.

On the back of this performance and their last EP I’m looking forward to their return visit in July.

Sweet Crisis - a contemporary Blues rock band, who set their stall out early with an impressive drum solo from Dave Cullen in their second number. Singer Leo Robarts picked up his guitar when needed adding depth to the sound and his impressive vocals lent themselves well to the sometimes soulful, sometimes funky, sometimes rock infused numbers. With lead guitarist Piers Mortimer breaking loose at given moments adding great feeling and energy into his solos. The whole performance came across as self-indulgent but that worked brilliantly as the band were in the moment, clearly enjoying the experience and that energy spread to the audience.

An encore was duly called for and they ended the night with a fantastic cover of Lenny Kravitzs’ Are You Gonna Go My Way.

Definitely ones to watch for in the future.
