Phil X And The Drills

Singles; I Love You On Her Lips and Right On The Money

Singles review by; Nick

I Love You On Her Lips - 8th February 2021

Right On The Money - August 2020

With a CV as impressive as guitar hero Phil X’s, I had to review his new single. Having worked with artists such as Alice Cooper, Orianthi, Avril Lavigne and of course is now with Bon Jovi replacing Ritchie Sambora in 2016, he goes from strength to strength. Today I will be reviewing two singles from his own band Phil X And The Drills. I have really been looking forward to listening to this and finding out what the guy is all about up front.

I will start with the most recent release, I Love You On Her Lips.

I really enjoyed it, a nice driving song which draws you in from the get-go. The song opens with a killer guitar riff from the man himself and like a car on the motorway you are 0-60 in second's flat. The lyrics are witty with the usual rock n roll tale. Phil plays on his words intelligently making the listener think one thing when he is writing about another and it impressively makes the listener think while rocking away. I always say a good lyric makes a song and he has done well here, there are also sing-along gang vocals which will make you want to scream at the top of your lungs with the top down. The band are on fine form and I love the vocals of Phil, a no-nonsense Hard Rock voice which suits the song perfectly.

A fantastic single which advertises the new album well.

Right On The Money is another fine song that kicks off in style. Phil kicks off the song with a tasty riff followed by the rest of the band kicking in with the beat almost having a blues style shuffle to it. His vocals are on top form on this song and I really love his voice, it is the type of vocal that grows on you and any singer out there would want to try his style as soon as they hear it. The song slows down mid-way through, giving bassist Danny Spree and drummer Gary Novak time to shine and oh shine they do. I am a sucker for a good drum solo and Gary delivers here. I have often said three-piece bands play the hardest as they are stripped down to the bare bones and must work just that little bit harder to sound on top form. And they really play their hearts out here. I think along with the Winery Dogs, Phil X And The Drills are one of the finest power trios of our time.

In conclusion to hearing and reviewing these two singles, I really like them, they have sold me to the band. I believe a lot of rock fans will get these, there is certainly something for everybody here and I cannot wait to hear the whole album.
