Bowling For Soup - Sometimes I Don’t Mind (single)
Review by; Hungryasabadger
Does anyone else suddenly feel old? If not I’m sure some of you will when you hear the news that Bowling For Soup are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. To celebrate their silver jubilee the Texan pop-punkers have undertaken to release one cover version of songs they love each month for the next twelve months and ‘Sometimes I Don’t Mind’ is the first song to be unleashed from this ambitious project.
From listening to the track you wouldn’t know it was a cover at all as the song appears tailor made for BFS, all catchy hooks and humour laden lines with a killer beat. The song was first released by Detroit punk rockers The Suicide Machines and the BFS version sticks closely to the original recording but it is also instantly recognisable as Bowling For Soup thanks to Jaret Reddick’s vocal stylings. ‘Sometimes I Don’t Mind’ is the ‘Soup’s first official release to not feature long time bassist Erik Chandler and, although die hards such as I will always miss Chandler on the live stage, his replacement Rob Felicetti appears to have fit in seamlessly with the band’s trademark sound and I look forward to future releases and tours featuring the band’s current line-up.
The song itself can quite easily pass as a lovely, heart warming ditty being sung by Jaret to his significant other until part way through the third verse it suddenly dawns on the listener that the song is about a dog! A quick glance at the original video from The Suicide Machines confirms this straightaway but having never heard the song before I took great pleasure in discovering this for myself via the Bowling For Soup version.
All in all the single release of ‘Sometimes I Don’t Mind’ is a triumph and a welcome return to the scene by the BFS boys and I cannot wait to hear next month’s offering. Keep ‘em coming boys!
