Voodoo Vegas - Feeling So Good

Review by; DeeDee

I was fortunate enough to see Voodoo Vegas earlier this month, they were impressive live, so I jumped at the offer of checking out their new album. Based in Bournemouth the 5 are fronted by Lawrence Case, a charismatic, natural born leader who has no trouble in wooing the crowd. The release date is still undecided, but rumour has it that it will be November, so patience. In the meantime a couple of singles have been out a while, ‘Don’t Need Your Love’ and ‘Revolution’ which will help you sample what the Voodoo’s are about.

The first single ‘Don’t Need Your Love’ is also the first track. A burst of guitars and a catchy chorus with full on harmonies, a fine start. Keeping to the same order ‘Revolution’ is next, another shiny example of classy guitar solos and adhering lyrics. The songs do cling to you, the writing by the band, who all seem to collaborate, works well. ‘Follow Your Leader’ has a more down to earth intro and the song is an example of how Voodoo Vegas can hold the air with a ballad. ‘Puppet’ raises the bar, a grunge based track with awesome licks. The 2 guitars of Jon Dawson and Merylina Hamilton combine and compliment each other, while bass man Ash Moulton is a force to be reckoned with on ‘Pretender’ which turns the tide again. Funk meets smooth vocals and a strong backline is headed by Mike Rigler on drums.

‘How Much Is Enough’ has chants coming at you, before the sombre tones takeover, powerful stuff and Case hits some high-enders to enrich it, before more dazzling guitar work. It finishes with the chanting, which is quite intoxicating. Then there’s a short instrumental called ’World Keeps Turning’ which is a pleasant interlude. The title song ‘Feeling So Good’ appears at this late stage, another chance for the guitars to blast out, although, I feel it doesn’t hit home until it’s nearly over. Following on is ’Come On Over’ and it’s time for the drums and bass to provide a focal point, this has a warmth and runs nicely. Last is ‘Love Shines’ which I did hear live at the gig held at The Station in Cannock, heavy again with a slow, powerful message. There is a bite to this album, I like the way they keep you enthralled, due to no songs having little or no similarity.

To sum up ‘Feeling So Good’ is a well balanced album, Voodoo Vegas are an edgy rock band and a very capable bunch, who deliver some powerful messages. If you listen to the singles and want more, then pre-order the album on the link below.
