Chez Kane - Chez Kane

Album review by; The Dark Cookie

Back in the early 80’s I was a hormone driven, spotty teenage mess who found Rock and Metal.  My pit of a bedroom was soon over run with posters of the rock stars of the day, and it wasn’t long before the ladies of my chosen genre.  Doro, The Wilson sisters, Joan Jett, Lee Aaron, Pat Benatar, Vixen, heck I even had a thing for Kerrang’s own Pandora Peroxide, all looked down on me from those walls, and it is a damn good job they couldn’t talk!

And if the lovely and talented CHEZ KANE had been around in those days, oh yes! She would have been both in my record collection and blasting out of my speakers, and been on that wall.  OK now I’ve committed that to screen it does sound a bit creepy, but too be honest here is a lady who lets the music do the talking, and it is telling tales that are straight out of the 1980’s.

CHEZ was part of a band KANE’D with her sisters, but it was CRAZY LIXX main man DANNY REXON, on a talent search for the fantastic Frontiers Music whom “discovered” CHEZ, from her amazing YouTube videos.  The man worked with CHEZ on the album, writing, producing and playing, leaving CHEZ to do what she does best, blast out the vocals.  And both sides had to be equally good and right to work.  Catchy well written songs, check.  Amazing vocals, yep! Soaring solos and fantastic musicianship, in spades yes! And topped off with a production job that reflects to sound of the era, but avoids all that was not good of the 80’s sound.

There isn’t a bad song on the album. From opener “Better Than Love” to the last notes of “Dead End Street” these songs to two things, take you back to an era, when, if you are of the same vintage as this reviewer, things felt simpler, more fun and there were DEFINITELY no global pandemics to ruin the buzz.  OK that is a very rose-tinted view of then, but that’s what music is supposed to do, either remind you, or create the good times.  And this album does both with aplomb.  When sassy is needed, CHEZ is really, REALY sassy (“Get It On”), when it needs to be emotional (“Defender Of The Heart”, “Better Than Love”), CHEZ is can tug the heart-strings with ease, but more importantly when it is called for this lady R.O.C.K.S! “Rocket On The Radio”, “Ball and Chain”, “All Of It”, “Ball And Chain”, dagnam it! All of the songs showcase the talents on display equally, and all the songs are great.  This is a faultless album, yes it is pure nostalgia, but who the hell cares! Not me!
