Sam Millar - Holy Sass EP

Released 30/8/19

Review by; DeeDee

Better known as one of the guitarists in Bigfoot, SAM MILLAR delivers us the highly anticipated ‘Holy Sass’, a 5 track EP which has already seen plenty of nods within the media walls.  Following the bands decision to call it a day, Sam decided to just start writing some new stuff, mainly to prevent madness.  With plenty of influences, such as Brian May, Zakk Wilde and Jimmy Page on his list, what would he come up with?

‘Eyes’ has a simple tapping introduction, my first thoughts are commercial pop.  But as Sam starts to add his voice and some interweaving guitar, it does get more intricate.  With plenty of backing vocals and harmonies, it is a really lush sound.  The second song ‘Cyber Girl’ starts quietly and with pillow talk lyrics, so soft and adhering.  Then it starts to gather momentum, with more guitar screaming and ever increasing pressure. Quite an impressive track, the writing is creative to say the least.

‘Let Me Yet’ instantly draws you in, bouncing around with mind mannered guitar and catchy vocals. It has a fun loving edge to it, you will find yourself singing days later.  ‘Lost In Translation’ allows the tempo to ease up, a soulful ballad with more harmonies, a cruising guitar solo and the production is 100%.  Final song ‘Strangers’ was released as a single and gained a lot of attention.  This is the most flowing and rapid track of the EP, highly commercial, if a solo career doesn’t follow, Mr Millar could gain fame writing film scores.

Sam Millar you have surprised me, this debut solo EP has all the elements of a successful song writer.  It goes without saying that a tour must follow in the wake of the final BIGFOOT shows.
