Patrick Stone of Budderside

Firstly, can you give us a bit of the background to Budderside - how did you guys meet?
On the streets of Hollywood. After hours parties, really. We all played in well known bands, so we knew, by reputation, who each other were, before we even met. I think we all had something great, but yearned for something better. Meeting one another made that promise. Playing together proved it. Writing songs together sealed the bond. We would have killed each other by now if it weren’t for the music, lol, all the same 'kill anything that gets in our way'.
How is it just completing your first UK tour, with Bulletboys and Enuff Z Nuff?
It was an honor to travel and perform alongside EZN and Bulletboys. We are very grateful they shared their UK fan base with us and we had a blast!
How long have you been Budderside band?
The band has actually been together for many years. We’ve been full force since the deal. The debut album came out in the Fall of 2016 and we’ve been touring ever since.
And who is Patrick Stone for those who haven't heard of you before?
I’m a sober, hardworking, honest man. I take every chance to be courageous and live passionately. I have an incredible story and believe it can help others. I don’t know anyone else with a story like mine. I’ve been given a second chance to live a life of purpose. My calling is music, so here I am. My band, brothers, family and friends are my backbone, my core strength is ours to share.
Who did you love to listen to while growing up?
I know you mean bands, but I listened to my sister, Devon and my brother, Cliff. She wasn’t a singer or musician, but a true rebel through and through. She didn’t take shit from anyone. She roamed with the wild. I adopted her persona and album collection. Motörhead, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Boston, Queen... All of it! My sister gave me her guitar when I was a little child. My brother took it up a notch and formed a band with me. He played the drums.
Have your early listenings inspired your sound?
Of course. You can’t help that. Very grateful for their influence. If you can hear our heroes in our music, we’re doing something right! My brother’s taste in music stepped outside the “rock” box a bit. I love how that kept me from becoming a total metal head right off the bat. Although, eventually... ha ha... I still remain influenced by all genre, from classical to country.
Did you always aspire to be a musician?
Absolutely. It’s all I’ve ever wanted since before I can remember. Nothing else excites me the way it does. My dad tells me I wasn’t even 5 years old when I told him I wanted to be a star.
What was the first live music you remember seeing?
Some of the older kids in school were good and I would jam with them. My brother made me watch this guy, Matt Colb. He was bad ass. He did a drum solo at our talent show. So cool. My first concert ever was The Steve Miller Band. My second was Metallica.
Do you have one all time favourite album/song?
Maybe Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse Of Reason or our debut album.
What was your first guitar and what do you play now?
My sister gave me my first guitar when I was just a child. It was a classical, nylon string guitar. I taught myself to play on that. Through the years I’ve owned every type at some point. I had a Black Pearl, Les Paul... PRICELESS! Stolen right out of my bedroom. Another that stands out was an American Standard. Looked just like a 57 Chevy. Brake light would come on when you slammed the whammy bar... totally rad!
Now, I play ESP. My buddy Allen Steelgrave turned me onto them when he was the AR guy over there. I’ve been with them ever since. My man, Chris Cannella, takes good care of me and I own a few now. Love ‘em!
Who came up with the name for the band?
It was an accident, isn’t it obvious?!!! Lol. I flubbed a line improvising. After listening back to a recording of the band’s first jam together, the guys asked if I meant to rhyme Genocide with Butter-side. Being the smart ass that I am, I replied - “That’s the name of the band!” Ha ha. The name, BUDDERSIDE, just stuck. It’s kind of a huge middle finger to all bands that take themselves a little too seriously. The fact that The Stoneman looked back at me and understood what I was trying to say with a name like that, made it meaningful to us. No one else will ever understand it the way Rich, Stone and I do. It’s our family name. Colin gets it now too. We stand by it! Everyone who has ever seen us, gets it. It’s a trip, another dimension. The name kind of makes you want to dislike us, right? I mean, it makes you curious. Your guard is down, you think you’ll have a laugh, then it’s like.... What is this? That’s Budderside, MoFo! Never forget it! It’s really a homage to our perseverance.
The odds of anyone making it to begin with are against you, throw in a name like that and you better be good, or else! So, “budder” it up, we’re comin’ in-“side”!
You play guitar and sing, can you recommend any guitar playing tips for new players?
Playing and singing is the answer. Your wisdom awaits you on the other side of every strum. Sing your truth. Let the feeling guide you.
You're excellent at playing guitar and singing at the same time, is this a natural talent or something that required a lot of practice?
It’s a constant. The more you do it, the better you get. So I do it all the time.
You have just completed your first tour in the UK with Bulletboys and Enuff Z Nuff, how did the tour go, did you have any expectations of the UK (better weather perhaps!! Snow in March!!) How did these shows/venues compare to your US shows (with LA Guns for example) in terms of venue/audience?
Well, yes, we just came off of almost 9 months, opening for LA Guns in the US. The shows were off the hook! Plenty of fans, nice venues, a few shady ones here and there, but that’s part of the fun. We were offered the UK Tour with EZN and B.B. last minute, really. Chip Z’ Nuff and I have been in a few projects together, including Adler’s Appetite. I love Chip, I hail him. I would tour Syria with him! Lol... So, it was a “no brainer”. Budderside got to pop their UK cherry and spend time with two great bands. We never played with Bulletboys before. Marq is extremely talented and the guys are charming. We had a lot of fun and learned a lot.
The UK is breathtaking. We were in awe of the architecture and the countryside. The weather was “interesting”. ... The people, most of all, were beautiful souls and brilliant minded. We made so many fans and new friends. We cannot wait to return.
Are the UK fans more reserved than US fans or vice versa?
I think it’s the same. They responded very well to us and I am still messaging everyday with all of the fans and friends we made over there. Again, we can’t wait to get back and see everyone again. Thank you, UNITED KINGDOM!!!
How do UK venues compare/differ to the US? Do you have any venues/towns in the US you love to play?
Obviously, We felt the history in the UK. Seemed everywhere we played, the stage had been doused with the blood sweat and tears of music legend. We really can’t compare, though. We love playing anywhere. I do love an English accent, though. Especially on the ladies.
You've toured with some great people in the various bands you've been a part of... who would you love to tour with next if you were able to pick any band/artist?
Foo Fighters
How was the MORC, was this your first time on this cruise? How many shows did you get to play while on the cruise?
MORC was the most fun I’ve ever had, ever. We got to play twice. Paradise itself, CocoCay, and on the pool stage. It is a truly magical experience. April and Larry, we love you. Can’t wait to do it again in 2019!
Tell us about your debut album, how long did it take to write and record?
A few of the songs were written right there on the spot and others we had lined up. We’ve written over a hundred songs. I feel it’s important to keep writing so the perspective and the message are current. But, when you have “timeless” songs you love in your arsenal, use ‘em!
Where do you draw inspiration to write from?
Everywhere and everything. Honestly. You never know what will cause the spark.

Do you write the music too or does everyone have a hand in this?
I’ve done a lot of the writing, but everyone has a hand in it. Now, more so than ever.
Is the next album written and ready to record, or are you still writing?
It is now. Only a few bells and whistles left along with some perfecting. We’re at NRG Recording studios in Los Angeles now with Producer, Jay Baumgardner, recording our sophomore. Never been so excited.
Do you have a release date?
Well, we’ll be done recording in time for Wacken Open Air and our European tour, come August. But, a release date will have to be decided by our label, The Mighty Motörhead Music...
(When) Will we see you in the U.K again soon?
You can’t keep us away....

Many thanks to Patrick for taking the time to answer our questions.
We can’t wait to hear the new album and see them again on their return visit to the UK.
