TSL - Irreverent EP

EP review by; DeeDee

The sophomore EP by TSL came out back in March and the boys from St Petersburg, Florida have attained a couple of new band members since their debut last year with the three tracks EP, ‘Fun Little Lies’. Apart from enlisting bassist Adam Kury of Candlebox, they have managed to acquire Luis Alicea to play drums. Luis may not be the most well known sticks man but he has played with Steve Vai, Julio Iglesias and Al Di Meola. The latter being one of the top guitarists worldwide who can pick his band mates from the crème de la crème, fair play TSL. Founder members, vocalist Cameron Canedy and guitarist Jeff Korb started the band back in 2018 and have become firm radio favourites, especially on Boston Rock Radio. However, the meaning of their name, ‘TSL’ remains a secret!

‘Irreverent’ is made up of four tracks and the starter ’Tears Or Champagne’ is a light and melodic composition that settles you in nicely. The vocals are quite pure and Cameron delivers those higher notes with astute technique. The caressing guitar and soft rhythm is a perfect contrast to the crispness of the lyrics. ‘Wicked Kiss’ is a totally different product. The heavy feel of the strings and static riff make it meaner and as the notes transcend with driving appeal, the vocals are brought in a much harder fashion. Some decent guitar work before a leaner break and I adore the way it turns into a tangled finish. ‘Resurrect Me’ is a more direct hit, while the tempo simmers and the music provides the basic feed, with more stunning guitar and simplistic drums. It Is Cameron rolling with sharpness and his shrill and often shouting words that are forefront to this songs identity. The more you listen to it and I guarantee you will play it more than a few times; the more you begin to take in the overall sadness, yet the pleasurable culmination the song offers. ‘Leaving Alone’ resumes the more melodic side of TSL and the strident vocals are turned down a little. There is a long glance at superb chords from Jeff and while the track has an air of melancholy, it is mixed with rising hopefulness.

I wouldn’t class TSL in the pure rock category, as their sound is mellow, alternative and often dark. Such a modern theme with accomplished musicians means they could actually create their own genre. ‘Irreverent’ is four tracks that display multi faceted sides, confirming that TSL are contemporary, stylish and engaging, they also have deeper, heavier roots and that’s what makes them so appealing.
