Jack J Hutchinson Band
Leo’s Red Lion, Gravesend
8th August 2020
Live review by; Myk

It’s been way too long since I’ve been to a live show; in fact it was the same band at the same venue back in early March. Fortunately that venue Leo’s Red Lion has both indoor and outdoor stages meaning it was perfectly geared up for the new social distancing required for this gig.

The area in front of the stage can cater for over 200 but to allow for the current guidelines ticket sales had been restricted to around 70 by the promoters ‘The Rock Co-Operative’ who are just 5 guys who love music and put on gigs by their favourite new rock bands. Sanitation stations, a one-way system to the bar meant that the whole social distancing worked well.
Now for the music, as you can imagine the lockdown and live gig restrictions must be incredibly frustrating for bands so I was expecting a real gung ho delivery. As is normal with Jack, he may have had a set list but the chances of him sticking to the order are slim, so immediately the set list went out the window as they kicked off with a tribute to the late great Peter Green covering Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Oh Well’ before launching into ‘Justified’ and ‘Haunted Bones’, this show tying in nicely with vinyl release of their live album ‘Who Feeds The Lockdown?’.

Whether it was the long break or the joy of being able to perform before a live audience again Jack’s voice was fantastic, not sure I’ve heard it sound so good. Lazarus and Felipe as usual were clearly enjoying themselves and adding that solid and dynamic rhythm section that is now synonymous with Jack’s live shows.

In the 2 hour set we were also treated to ‘Rattlesnake Woman, ‘Piece Of Mind’, the highly personal and emotive ‘I Will Follow You’, the crowd involving ‘Sleep, Awake, Obey’, ‘Rapture’ from his collaboration in RHR, a great cover of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Heartbreaker’, the obligatory and superb Sabbath cover ‘War Pigs’, a personal favourite of mine ‘Boom’ from Jack’s Boom Boom Brotherhood, ‘Deal With The Devil’, ‘Hip Slickin’ and when we thought it was all over we were treated to 2 new numbers that they have been working on during the lockdown and finishing with ‘World On Fire’ a newish tune.

No doubt I‘ve missed a few numbers out but you get the idea, the set covered all Jack’s catalogue old and new and with a studio visit already booked up expect some more output in the not too distant future. They might not have performed before a live audience for a few months but you could not tell, they were absolutely superb and the limited audience were clearly delighted with the night’s entertainment.

For my sins my next task was to drive back down to Cornwall having popped back up from my holiday just for the evening and well worth the trip it was.
