Matt Mitchell & the Coldhearts
Review by; Danny Price
First of all a killer riff hits you right between the eyes with album opener “Black Diamonds”, and smooth, strong vocals from the man who certainly ain’t new to any of this and has shown it here with his first self-titled album. If, like me, the name didn’t ring a bell at first then you might be more familiar with band he was involved with prior to going solo. Matt has been part of UK AOR Rockers ‘Pride’, also the heavier ‘Furyon’ and more recently ‘Colour of Noise’. Now it’s time for a solo record and boy does it start well!
‘Home’ is op next starting with jangly guitars and keyboard swells and is a nice balance to ‘Black Diamonds’.
‘On and On’ has two beautiful solos- one Hammond organ and one guitar, It’s its upbeat and had a certain attitude!
‘Dare You to Watch’ and ‘Kings and Queens’ comes flowing in next with a almost modern
day Bon Jovi/U2 kind of sound, which doesn’t seem to keep you attention the same as the
earlier songs.
‘Unavailable’ has a nice little drum intro, and picks things up again. ‘Do You Wanna Be My
God’ is a little funky Bluesy type which rolls along nicely. ‘Old Enough & Ugly Enough’ is a
nice light country almost, feel to it.
This is a strong album, and although it seems to drift off a little halfway through, it certainly
starts and finishes strongly with “Waiting for the sun”.
I am most defiantly looking forward to catching him live!
