Last Of The Misfit Heroes
Misfit Misplaced EP
EP review by; DeeDee
A new band to emerge from South London in 2019 were Last Of The Misfit Heroes. Two cousins and their school friend, who decided to get together, after winning the battle against some mental health issues. The result is a highly positive attitude, ‘Not To Let Things Stop You’ and ‘Push Yourself’ are the bands mottos and from previously believing they didn’t fit in anywhere, gave them the idea to name the band, with misfits in the title, I guess it just went from there. Back in April they released their first EP ‘Misfit Misplaced’, four original tracks and from that they have received quite a bit of attention. Of course the recent lockdown hasn’t helped to promote themselves in front of live audiences, but tracks off the EP have been played on a few radio shows both here in the UK and in the US.
The title track is first up, there are a few lines of narrative before the low guitar and soulful vocals of frontman Steve Catt enter the scene. It’s a basic number, overlaid with an edgy rhythm, guitar licks that slice through the tempo and resonant drums throughout. It’s an energetic and messy tune. I like the low strings and the bass of Andrew Jackman which makes the style on this one moody, but more industrial/punk, think of them as South London’s answer to the MC5. Although they do have more strings to their bow and don’t’ fit into one box, indeed ‘Pieces’ the second single and radio favourite, is deeper and the tone is more punching. There is a slight grunge feel to the vocals that are backed by a hook that throbs heavily in the shadows. Third number ‘When My Empire Falls’ continues with the moody and seductive vocals. The beat gently pursues, flowing like a fast stream and the effect is quite alluring. The last song was the first single and was released back in August 2019. ‘Wake Up Call’ must refer to that point in time after being lost in your own head, you suddenly awake, stand tall and learn to be at peace with yourself. It’s punky and gutsy, with a rapid line of shrill guitar and lyrics that are direct and defiant.
This is really a credible and well put together piece of work. For a new band to create something this different is not a common occurrence. Built on punk, some garage and rock, the Londoner’s certainly live up to their name and stand by it, you certainly can’t place them in just one category.
