Chains Of Daisy - Dead As Stone

EP review by: DeeDee

Describing themselves as a country rock, blues band, this trio based in London have only been together since last year. But in that short time, they have managed to catch the eye of Planet Rock and been in the running for ‘track of the week’ with Classic Rock Magazine. Playing in local London bars, they have built up quite a fanbase and released their debut EP ‘Dead As Stone’ back in May.

Not resting on their laurels, there is already talk of a follow up next year. Only getting our hands on the debut recently, it’s time to see what all the fuss is about.

The first number, which is the title track, is pure unadulterated rock and roll, very much in the style of the Dogs D’Amour and The Quireboys, with its honky-tonk keys. The song is perfect for those easy going, carefree moments, it’s so laid back. I like the guitar work from Carlos Oliveira and Aris, who appears to be something of a virtuoso, covering not only guitar, but bass and backing vocals too.

‘A Farewell Winter Blues’ is a very cleverly crafted ballad. We sample Michael Blackharts’ vocals, stripped back to the bare minimum, that’s necessary, to create a beautiful and bluesy masterpiece. I don’t like to keep comparing to others, but there are similarities with early Rolling Stones in places.

The third track ’Never Walk Alone’ is a smooth and semi acoustic, captivating song. Effortless, it winds along blending simple guitar and vocals. Last up is the latest single ‘Morning Sun’ the kind of stomp that Zeppelin would add to the end of an album. A bit more loose and I like the way CHAINS OF DAISY are not afraid to experiment and push a few boundaries on what is a debut recording.

All in all, quite an interesting EP. The variation in styles and creativity shines through and it’s no wonder they are turning heads.
