HOLLOWSTAR - Debut Album HOLLOWSTAR
Released 3/5/19
Review by; DeeDee
These young Cambridge hopefuls formed in 2015. Since then they worked hard enough to produce ‘Some Things Matter’ a 6 track EP in 2017, which was so well received it reached 13 in the iTunes rock chart. This success led to 2018 being a mighty leap for them, with tours supporting Dan Reed Network and Graham Bonnet. They also played a stack of headline shows and festivals all over.
Hollowstar have already released singles from the new album, ‘All I Gotta Say’ being a constant on Planet Rock Radio and ‘Let You Down’ a favourite with Classic Rock Magazine. With an ever increasing fanbase, the band have now finished their first album and a tour will commence later this month.
‘Take It All’ is the first up, an instrumental introduction before Joe Bronson’s vocals join in. Punchy and whirling guitar, with repetitive lyrics, this immediately sucks you in. The single ‘Let You Down’ follows hot on its heels, more moody and with a chasm of a groove, Joe gives it some soft and soulful vocals and there is a charming little guitar solo that screams at you. ‘Invincible’ is another that is catchy, full of intersecting guitars and steadfast drums. Joe, who also plays bass, has one of those haunting voices, effortless and gently absorbing. The NWOCR favourites continue to impress with the more basic and beautiful ‘Think Of Me’ there’s a wonderful chorus and it’s so well written. ‘All I Gotta Say’ which has been played so much on national radio, has an instant appeal. This is the one that sticks in your head ever after, it’s the hook of the chorus and the twin guitars producing a mesmerising effect that totally nail it. ’Good Man Gone’ is another fast paced and smooth rocker, the band are so tight and well balanced. I like the way ‘Overrated’ and ‘Down By The Water’ contrast each other, before the final song ’Sinner’ which is another packed with stunning vocals and low groove strumming.
It’s hard to grasp how mature these guys sound and what they have achieved, in the short time they have been in existence. This debut album flows, because the tracks blend, without any breaking the rhythm. Usually that would make it sound rather mundane, but not Hollowstar, their style of play manages to keep you entertained throughout, making this is such a good listen. 2019 is already seeing them billed at some of the biggest festivals such as Hard Rock Hell and Steelhouse and with their first headline tour already selling tickets by the dozen, one thing you can be sure about, Hollowstar are on the up.
