Silverthorne - Tear The Sky Wide Open

EP review by; Michael

If this has flown under your radar, let me put it front and centre for a direct missile lock...

And please note... The fasten seat belt light, although illuminated is merely a kindly suggestion.

Journeyman drummer Brian Tichy, best known for his time with Whitesnake, Billy Idol and Foreigner, brings us his latest project...  Silverthorne with the debut EP 'Tear the Sky Wide Open'.

Aiding and abetting Tichy on this maiden flight are vocalist/guitarist Pete Shoulder and bass player Daniel Spree both of whom are veteran's with resumes founded in the hard rock hemisphere.

The title track opens proceedings, sounding like a Hercules transporter spooling up its engines prior to take-off. Its majestic bravado has a weight to it greater than gravity and willingly accepts that all turbulence will be welcomed. It’s thick and loud and you can taste the potency of the aviation fuel behind every note!

"Roll Me Back Again" is chocked to the brim with boozy bluesy swagger and the dynamics of the slide guitar give it a Tennessee vibe, that coats your ear with a warmth that can only be equalled by a neat Jack Daniels... and as you sit back and dive deeper, you can't help but think just how much Pete Shoulder sounds like Chris Cornell, from his phrasing and delivery, to that unmistakable characteristic tone, its full of fury and snarled angst.

If 'Black River Rising" had a smell, it would be that of sex stained bed linen from a night of unbridled passion with a lustful wanton lover. It’s laid down and low-if with a dirty filth that bathes you in a communion of passion and fire, you really couldn't ask for more!

"Movin" sticks out sonically from the EP like a defiant nail that is almost begging the hammer to try and knock it into place. It's as if Josh Homme in his QOTSA guise broke into the studio and changed all the settings on the mixing desk prior to mastering. Quirky, cool and somewhat funky, it's a gear change that makes you want to move with a catchy hook and riff... very L.A.

And then we have "Haunted By The Dawn"

From the opening gallop of the bass and drums you'd be forgiven if you thought you were listening to 'Achilles' Last Stand' by Led Zeppelin...

If only Greta Van Fleets take on Zeppelin could be as confident and masterful as this...

It picks up from where Page and Plant left off...

If this track was a woman, I'd marry her...

Its perfection!

5/5
