Cassidy Paris - Flirt EP

EP review by; DeeDee

Miss Paris is quite well known in her native Australia, not only because she is the daughter of Steve Janevski (The Radio Sun, Wicked Smile), but also as being very much the young face of female, feisty rock, in her home town of Melbourne. Brought up in a musical household Cassidy has had plenty of support from Dad, but she is very much her own commodity. Endorsed by Fender and working with Paul Laine (Danger Danger, The Defiants), she lists Lzzy Hale, Joan Jett, Pink and Avril Lavigne as influences, she also likes Def Leppard and the variety reflects in her music. This EP titled ‘Flirt’ boasts 5 tracks, which have all been released as singles over the past few years.

First up is ‘Wannabe’, a stab at the current desire for social popularity, whereby talent counts for nothing and only getting yourself on screen appears to matter. For one so young, Cassidy has a clear vision and I like the way she wants to use her music to try and change attitudes. ‘Wannabe’ is a melody with a punch and the chorus is a bouncing spin that makes the song’s message pretty uplifting and direct. ‘Like I Never Loved You’ chimes into being, before the flowing and soft harmonies take place. Smooth and gracious but with some edgy rhythm, it has a commercial sound that could reverb over the airwaves of any main radio station. ‘Give Me Your L O V E’  with the hollow drums backing it up, is a sleazy little number. I love the passionate vocals and the sultry R’n’B tempo, a simple technique but it has such a different twist from the norm. The final 2 songs are live versions and ‘Song For The Broken Hearted’ written by Cassidy and Paul, has lyrics that sum up that feeling of hurt really well -

‘I think you know where this goes, I think you froze, you'll never know, Maybe I’m crazy, things got hazy, Maybe I’m just too blind to see, Sayonara, no more drama, You never really loved me.’

Powerful stuff and the live vocals are more suppressed, which adds to the atmospherics and effect. There’s also a guitar solo midway that adds more dynamics and a stream of backing harmonies, which all together creates a very intense piece of work. The final track is ‘Talk About It’ and we take off again, this time with a ‘light as a feather’ approach. Rocky to the brim and yet another that has a commercial noise that could be a monster hit.

If this is the future of female rock, then our world is safe. Cassidy has a vast future ahead of her and already has all the support and guidance to ensure she makes it happen. I know she is desperate to tour, so once the safety nets of Covid are lifted, I hope we can see Miss Paris in the UK.
