Pretty Maids – Maid In Japan
Album review by; Myk
This live album comes with a great 80’s keyboard laced rock sound from this enduring Danish band who have continued to produce new music with regular album releases since their debut in 1983.
It is nice to hear a live album these days that has both crowd noise and in between song banter as this gives the recording context and atmosphere. This performance was recorded on their 2017-18 tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their 1987 release Future World where they played the album in its entirety. The sound quality is superb and there are highlights all through, kicking off with ‘Future World’ and ‘We Came To Rock’. There is a certain simplicity and cheesiness to the songs but that fits the era they were written in. ‘Needles in the Dark’ is a real stand out moment, a quality song and a delivery to match.
All too soon they have rattled through the whole album, but then it’s on to some more tracks from their back catalogue. ‘Mother of All Lies’ comes from 2013’s Motherland before we are treated to brace including the title track and ‘Bull’s Eye’ from 2016’s Kingmaker. ‘Little Drops Of Heaven’ from 2010 album Pandemonium and then they go back to 1992’s Sin Decade to finish off with in some style with the title track.
This certainly puts a smile on your face and is well worth seeking out, it also comes with a DVD of the show.
