The Suicide Notes - Pleasures Of Despair

(Acoustic Demos Volume 1)

EP Review by; DeeDee

Billy T and Alex Holmes must be wondering what’s hit them, the pre-sale and limited edition of this EP sold out in just 36 hours, that’s quicker than Tescos stock of toilet roll. They are producing a non-limited version as I write and a full electric EP is due out soon, so don’t panic. For those who love the Dogs D’Amour, The Quireboys and all of that ilk, this band is for you. If you wanted to run away and be a bandit with Tyla or hang in the bar at 3am with Spike, then give these guys a listen. Not only do they have a similar, sleaze filled, bar room and gutter ridden sound, The Suicide Notes are fast becoming a sizeable institution, matching their peers. Billy T, delivers rasping and sandpaper textured vocals, he also produces some awesome artwork, which is surely destined for the EP/album covers.

Pleasures Of Despair (Volume 1), is a 4 track acoustic EP that is rammed with lamenting, romantic and poetic gestures. ‘Smoke It Like A Cigarette’, has so much emotion, chords strummed with laid bare vocals, with that sense of despair, as the EP title suggests. ‘Take A Bullet’ is more rattling, it has a lowdown, pavement licking attitude that epitomises the Suicide Notes’ style. ‘Momma Sang The Blues’ is like a Sailors sea shanty, with a chorus to join in and tale to tell, you’re alongside them, sitting on deck necking a bottle of rum. ‘Ragdoll’ was recorded live, it is a fitting track to complete this work. Lush guitar and a simple melody, it’s a lingering journey into the fading light.

What a breath of smoke filled air, what a contrast to the manufactured and often mundane, what a band to lift our spirits in these troubled times. I can’t wait for the future offerings and to watch the mayhem and unrehearsed antics on stage again.
