Black Lakes ‘Dead Gods’ album review

by; Ms Hyde13

It's impressive to see how much acclaim and success this metal outfit from South Wales has achieved since their formation in 2018. Crowdfunding their first album, " For All We've Left Behind," and receiving support from fans for new music shows a strong connection with their audience and a dedicated fan base. The fact that they were able to fund the production of their second album, "Dead Gods," through pre-orders on their website speaks volumes about their fan support and the quality of their music. Working with producer Romesh Dodangoda It's clear that this band has a bright future ahead.

H.A.T.E

"Here at the End" serves as a powerful opening track that unleashes a rage-inducing assault on the system. With intense instrumentation, aggressive vocals, and hard-hitting lyrics, the song sets the tone for the album, conveying a sense of defiance and rebellion. The raw energy and emotion in the music resonate with listeners, igniting a fire within them to challenge norms and stand up against oppression. "Here at the End" grabs the audience's attention from the start, leaving them eager to join the band on a rebellious journey through the rest of the album.

Rapture

The second track Rapture opens a lot quieter before your grasp by the thick riffs; it feels like you have a mere few seconds beyond and you’re swept away by the tracks intensity and immersive quality. The juxtaposition of the calm opening and the sudden shift to a thick, powerful riff creates a dynamic and captivating listening experience.

Hurricane

"Hurricane" emerges as an anthemic track with essences reminiscent of 30 Seconds to Mars, capturing a grand and larger-than-life sound. With soaring vocal melodies, powerful instrumentals, and emotionally charged lyrics, the song exudes a sense of epicness and intensity.

White cliffs

"White Cliffs" is my stand out track off the album and it sets the stage for an emotional journey right from the start, as the guitar riffs introduce a forbidding tone that hints at the depth of feelings to come. The sense of foreboding created by the instrumentation immediately draws the listener in, preparing them for a poignant and introspective experience. The atmospheric quality of the guitar riffs adds a layer of complexity to the music, evoking a mood of contemplation and longing. In just a few seconds, "White Cliffs" manages to convey a sense of emotional weight and raw vulnerability.

Vapour

"Vapour" stands out as a great rock track within the album, providing a lighter feeling amidst the overall tone. However, the juxtaposition between the upbeat music and the heart-wrenching vocals creates a compelling contrast that adds depth to the song. While the music may exude a sense of energy and positivity, the emotional depth of the vocals betrays a more poignant and introspective narrative. This interplay between the musical arrangement and the lyrical content adds layers of complexity to "Vapour," The track's ability to balance contrasting emotions showcases the band's versatility and skill in delivering a nuanced and impactful musical piece.

Dead Gods

The title track "Dead Gods" serves as another anthemic and emotionally powerful track on the album, capturing the essence of the overall emotional journey. With its grand and impassioned sound, the song commands attention and leaves a lasting impact on the listener. The combination of powerful vocals, sweeping instrumentals, and poignant lyrics creates a sense of epicness and emotional resonance that reverberates throughout the track.

Burn

In the 7th track "Burn," the album continues to impress.  One standout element of this track is the playful exploration of vocal pitch, adding a unique and engaging dimension to the song. By experimenting with different vocal tones and pitches, this brings a dynamic and inventive flair to "Burn," further elevating the track and contributing to its overall appeal.

Dark Glass

"Dark Glass"  has the potential to receive immense airplay once the album is released. With its infectious and playable qualities, the song seems poised to capture the attention of listeners and make a mark on the music scene. The captivating mix of music, vocals, and energy in "Dark Glass" likely sets it up for success and popularity on the airwaves. It's exciting to anticipate the impact that this track could have when it reaches a wider audience upon the album's release. Here's to hoping that "Dark Glass" shines brightly and receives the recognition it deserves!

The Fallen

"The Fallen" evokes a nostalgic feel reminiscent of early 2000's music, drawing on catchy melodies and a blend of great vocal performances and music.”The Fallen" maintains a strong presence within the album, demonstrating the band's versatility and ability to deliver songs that are both melodic and engaging.

Dark Before The Dawn

"Dark Before The Dawn" serves as a fitting conclusion to the album, offering a beautiful and atmospheric experience that evokes a sense of hope and triumph. The track's cinematic quality and ethereal soundscapes conjure images of a blockbuster movie climax, where hope is finally found after a tumultuous journey. With its sweeping instrumentals and poignant lyrics, "Dark Before The Dawn" captures the essence of overcoming adversity and emerging into the light after a period of darkness. As the closing track of the album, it leaves listeners with a sense of resolution and upliftment, bringing the emotional journey with Black Lakes to a poignant and satisfying end.

Black Lakes have created a truly remarkable album with ‘Dead Gods’ with their blend of music, vocals, and lyrics. Each track seems to offer something unique and captivating, drawing you  in with its powerful melodies, emotive vocals, meaningful lyrics, and impressive production quality.
